Silk Road Project is still spinning beautiful musi

During its decade-long run, tiffany necklaces clearance, Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project has become the kind of ambitious,Thanksgiving surprise gift, multicultural ensemble and free-ranging idea that speaks to the master cellist's searching intellect, relentless curiosity and impatience with musical categories.

Inspired by the East-West exchange of culture, art and music that took place along ancient trading routes between Europe and Asia, Ma's ensemble showcases newly composed and traditional music from Silk Road cultures and destinations, from China to Iran, Azerbaijan and Korea. Music from the Americas has also seeped into the concept, including new works by the Argentine-born Osvaldo Golijov. The ensemble employs a revolving cast of musicians and 15 players are scheduled to appear in Detroit on instruments that range from traditional violin and viola to the Chinese pipa, Galician bagpipe and all manner of percussion.

At the center of it all is Ma, the self-effacing ringleader, sharing the spotlight generously with his colleagues and teaching by example that music is about the communication of inspired emotions, the quest for new modes of expression and authoritative mastery over the fundamentals of the idiom. And with the Silk Road Project, he has found a vehicle that manages to celebrate equally our differences and our commonalities.

JAZZ

Pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, tiffany Pendants sale, who turned 70 earlier this year, is one of the great jazz musicians on the planet. When he is in good company and in the mood to honor his straight-ahead roots, the inspired brilliance of his improvisations can stop the world.

Of course, Hancock has always had a populist side to his personality too, and the Big-To-Do in his landmark 70th year is the recent release of "The Imagine Project," an earnest crossover CD with a global-peace theme and starry guest list including, among others, Dave Matthews, Anoushka Shankar, Jeff Beck, John Legend, Chaka Khan, Seal, Wayne Shorter and Juanes. As a jazz critic, I'm not the target audience for the album, and found it mostly mundane, lacking the sublime melodic expression, surprise and texture of "River: The Joni Letters," Hancock's Grammy-winning marriage of jazz and adult-pop interpretations of Joni Mitchell's music.

Hancock's road band that arrives in Detroit next week is built to champion "The Imagine Project," with Hancock joined by guitarist Lionel Loueke, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, bassist Pino Palladino, shop for tiffany earrings, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and vocalist Kristina Train. Hancock will surely mix in a few of his classic compositions; even in crossover mode, jazz and the spark of improvisation percolate through his conception. But don't expect state-of-the-art post-bop from this group. (Some material calls the concert a tribute to Donald Byrd, the Detroit-bred trumpeter who gave Hancock his first big break in 1960, but at press time it remained unclear whether any specific tribute programming was planned.)

Agoura woman to head state nursing regulatory boar

A year after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger cleaned house at a regulatory board that routinely took more than three years to take action on nurses accused of violations, an Agoura Hills woman has been hired to help the board complete its path to reform.

Tricia West, earrings, a nurse and legal consultant with 30 years experience reviewing cases involving alleged medical violations, will serve as the executive officer for the California Board of Registered Nursing. Her responsibilities will include making sure investigations and enforcement take no longer than an average of 18 months to protect the public from nurses who make medical mistakes, abuse substances or commit other violations.

"I took the job because I saw it as an opportunity to improve patient care for the state of California," said West, pledging to continue a transformation effort that has brought increased funding, changes in the way investigations are processed and the hiring of more investigators. She noted that nationwide 200,000 Americans die each year from errors committed by healthcare professionals.

"Why the public is not more up in arms and paying attention to that, I don't get it," she said.

Her new position, which begins Sept. 15,Bead bracelet, will carry considerable scrutiny. A year ago, the Los Angeles Times and nonprofit news organization ProPublica published stories showing the board's enforcement process took an average of three years and five months. Nurses accused of being incompetent and dangerous continued to work.

A day after the investigation was published, Schwarzenegger fired three board members in the beginning of a purge that led to seven new people on the nine-seat board. The board's longtime executive officer, Ruth Ann Terry, resigned.

West said she has no inside information on what happened but wondered at the time if the key problem was lack of resources.

"I wondered whether they were being asked to do a job but yet their hands were being tied behind them," she said.

The nursing board controversies revealed that other state boards that regulate healthcare professions struggle with the same issue of completing investigations promptly. Schwarzenegger's calls for widespread reform is bringing $12.7 million in new funding to the healthcare regulatory boards from increased licensing fees. The new nursing board is in the process of hiring 37 people in positions related to investigations.

And while the money shows a commitment to change, nursing board staff are still mandated by the governor to take furlough days, though their budget comes not from the general fund but the licensing charges, said Julianne D'Angelo Fellmeth, administrative director of the Center of Public Interest Law at the University of San Diego School of Law.

"It doesn't help to increase your licensing fees so you can increase the staff but then make them sit home for three days a month," she said.

With or without the furlough days, the mandate for reform and the attention created by the newspaper investigation carries big pressure for West and other leaders of regulatory boards, said Fellmeth, who follows several of the state's boards.

"They're expecting her to improve that enforcement system and all the problems have been laid out very, very clearly," Fellmeth said.

West acknowledges her new job is a hot seat.

"Honestly, if they're looking for the status quo, they're looking at the wrong person," she said.

West is a registered nurse who is CEO and president of PJ West & Associates, a legal consulting firm that testifies in cases involving malpractice, personal injury and Medicare fraud. She's served as an expert witness on behalf of the nursing board but,Charm bracelet, depending on the evidence presented,Charm pendant, has also testified for nurses brought up before the board.

The search for a new executive officer took the nursing board a year with an existing staff member, Louise Bailey, serving as interim executive officer. Board President Ann Boynton said West was selected because of her experience running a business and managing staff as well as her career's focus on figuring out how healthcare problems happened and how they could have been fixed.

Cyndie Cole,Atlas charm bracelet, chief nurse executive for the Ventura County Health Care Agency, said that in the past hospitals ran the risk of hiring nurses without knowing their history. The regulatory system is already providing more information and doing it quicker, she said.

But Cole wants more information that allows employers to know if a nurse has been accused in the past. And whatever additional changes the board and its new executive officer make, they will be scrutinized.

"Absolutely," Cole said. "Without a doubt people are watching."

The electronic device will make it possible for the woman, from the Isle of Wight, to hear sound in both ears by running two stimulator wires from the single implant.

One will go into one inner ear and the other under her scalp from the single implant into her other ear - giving the 44-year-old woman much improved bilateral hearing.

Usually adults only have one implant fitted in one ear which leads to problems in noisy situations or finding where the sound is coming from.

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that can help both adults and children who have a severe to profound hearing loss.

It has two parts: an internal receiver/stimulator package and electrode array, and an external speech processor that looks like a hearing aid.

The device uses small electrical currents to directly stimulate the hearing nerve, which then sends signals to the brain where they are interpreted as sound.

The procedure has been developed at the South of England Cochlear Implant Centre (SOECIC), based at the University of Southampton.

Joint head of the centre Julie Brinton said: "Some adults and children have already received two implants, with one in each ear. The difference with the device being used today is that, although information is delivered to each ear, bracelets, there is only one implant."

Although around 40 of these devices have been implanted in patients in Europe, cuff Links, this is the first of its kind in the UK,watches, the centre said.

Woman gets nearly 20 years in Ligonier bank robber

The government may have had a theory about Sarah Blair's role in a Ligonier bank robbery, but it couldn't prove she organized the crime without information she gave under immunity once she agreed to plead guilty, a federal judge ruled yesterday.

U.S. District Judge Alan Bloch also ruled that the government couldn't prove without the Sheraden woman's testimony that a shot fired at a Dollar General store two miles away just prior to the robbery on Aug. 6, 2008 was intended to draw police way from the First Commonwealth Bank on Route 30.

Bloch refused to increase her sentence for either of those reasons before sentencing her to 19 years and seven months in prison. He also ordered Blair, a career criminal whose age is either 35 or 40, according to court records, earrings, to pay more than $169,Bead bracelet,000 in restitution to the victims and sentenced her to five years of probation.

Blair said she pleaded guilty in an attempt to give the victims closure.

"I am humbly apologetic for my actions," she told the judge.

The restitution includes the $77,000 stolen from the bank, about $2,tiffany,000 for property damaged during the robbery, money clips, $3,000 for therapy-related costs for one of the victims, and $86,bangles,000 to Travelers Insurance, which paid workers' compensation claims to two bank employees who were injured.

Three other people charged separately in the bank robbery are awaiting trial: Ricardo Brown, 23, of Garfield; Lyle McKenzie Haines Milner, 21, of New Kensington; and Rahil Rahman, no address or age available.

Why You Need To Look For an Ears Ringing Treatment

Tinnitus as an ear ringing problem can be caused by various factors. However, there are so many ears ringing treatment options nowadays, that a promise of relief is a definite possibility. The basic need for a successful treatment is the right diagnosis, as unless the right cause is identified, an ears ringing treatment will likely never be truly successful.A complete medical examination including all required tests will help to locate the exact origin of the problem. The best ear ringing treatment method is always the result of the best diagnosis of the problem. When you start feeling strong symptoms of tinnitus, there are several diagnostic tools to identify the cause, which will enable the physician to prescribe the right ear ringing treatment.Certain important diagnostic methods as part of ear ringing treatment include:1.An audiogram test is conducted to almost all patients suffering from tinnitus, where patterns of hearing loss are studied.2.An Auditory Brain Stem Response (ABR) test is administered where all the hearing nerves and their brain pathways are thoroughly examined.3.Though it's rare, there is a possibility that a hearing nerve tumor is present, and warrants a CT scan, or even an MRI. A similar scan is used to check the inner ear parts as well.Various ears ringing treatment methods are followed to cure tinnitus after ascertaining the right cause of the problem. Resulting ears ringing treatments are based on treating the cause. Once the major cause that creates ear ringing is cured, then the treatment is essentially over.Treating Stress & AnxietyEar ringing treatments usually treat stress, if present, as the initial procedure. A person, who is under stress is likely to worsen the pain and ringing. Therefore, it is important to give required medications to the patient to quickly lower the stress levels, which in turn reduces the chances of ear ringing. In an effort to relieve the problems, anti depressant meds are administered to sufferers. Certain patients are administered mild doses of anti-depressant medicines, usually for about 10 to 12 days, which reduces the problem.Treating ear problemsEar ringing treatments are next focused to cure the problems within the ear, which cause tinnitus. The problem of wax and swelling causes ear ringing among a lot of people. Sometimes, infection in the inner fluid and membranes also cause tinnitus, which can be cured using antibiotics and ear drops. As well, the problems in the middle ear, due to improper motion of middle ear bones can also lead to the development of tinnitus, which can be rectified using appropriate medications.Surgical methodsn very rare cases, tinnitus occurs when benign tumors occur in the brain. This condition is called neuroma, which is treated by surgery. The surgery is performed to remove the entire tumor and cure the problem of tinnitus forever.MedicinesNearly always, tinnitus happens because of infection in the ears. This infection is diagnosed as the major cause of ear ringing. These ear infections, either internal or external, are remedied with all sorts of antibiotics and medicines.Sometimes, anti epileptic drugs are also used to treat tinnitus. Apart from this, the patient is checked whether he/she is supplemented with any ototoxic medicines for some other medical problem. Ototoxic medicines are certain antibiotics, amino glycosides, salicylates, quinines, erythromycin, vancomycin, and diuretics, which give a toxic effect to the cochlea and other vestibular attributes of the inner ear. Once these medications are stopped or altered with substitutes, tinnitus gradually reduces and stops. Many people have had success with natural or homeopathic methods, and it’s suggested that these methods be tried as early as possible in the process. Though they don’t all have a 100% success rate, there is certainly no harm in applying these methods. To summarize, there are as many ears ringing treatments available, as there are causes of tinnitus. Getting it diagnosed correctly is the key, in order to get the appropriate ears ringing treatment.
